Xbox 360 interview, my thoughts

PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Revoltion; Three names that we are all going to be hearing much more of in the coming months/years. There used to be a rule that there wasn’t enough room in the console market for three systems, thought to be proven right by the demise of Sega’s efforts. This rule has been broken in the current market, with three makers sitting comfortably in there own niche. I have a feeling that history is going to repeat itself in the next generation of systems though. Why? Too little, too late for Nintendo.

There is no excitement in the wild for the Revolution. Microsoft have been pumping the 360 like there is no tomorrow, with Sony not far behind. But where is Nintendo? A quick piece at E3? Is that all you have for us? Disregarding the general lower specs of Nintendo units, I think Nintendo will loose this battle on marketing alone.

Some say Nintendo isn’t competing with the 360 or PS3 though, that they target a younger market and sell the game play, not the graphics. This is a dieing concept though. Just because Nintendo makes games for a younger audience doesn’t mean they will play them. Increasingly younger gamers want to play games targeted for an older audience, making the younger targeted games more and more obsolete. If Nintendo wants to sell consoles, they are going to have to get with the times.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for games for younger gamers, there is defiantly still a niche for that. I just think that eventually, Nintendo is going to have to go the way of Sega and focus on just selling games. If Nintendo’s art is games for younger audiences, go for it, but don’t reinvent the wheel with a new console for them.
