Uninspiring Software

I know it was a couple of days ago now, but I have been itching to throw my hat into the discussion that has been going on about Pirillo’s CPU article entitled “Windows Software: Ugly, Boring & Uninspired”. I watch the little back and forth between Scoble (his response here) and Chris (retort here), and wish to offer my opinion:

Nether OS X or Windows is inspiring me anymore. In my day-to-day work as a Unix admin, it was the FOSS tools that people developed that inspired me. Tools that didn’t look pretty (we’re talking console only here most of the time folks), but made life much easier for me, and I’m sure other admins.

One of the products that inspired me most, though not an application, but more of a web-service, was a product from Best Practical called RT. This is a FOSS request tracker package that although it has a few little quirks, works wonderfully. I challenge any group that wants to organize their workload (especially call-centers, but not limited to) to look into rolling it out.

Things that make my life easier inspire me, not pretty interfaces or another way to put frames on my digicam pictures.

Oh, and to Richard Querin, Scoble might sound a bit defensive, but you sound more like an evangelist than him. A bit of a suck up to… (no offence intended)

  • Seriously, is there no way to update an iWork doc you've already shared on iWork.com? You have to make a new doc? 2:25pm
